Wroclaw, Poland, 10 December 2008 (Polskie Radio) - The Dalai Lama has received the honorary citizenship of the south-western city of Wroclaw. Speaking during a special meeting of the City Council, its head Barbara Zdrojewska said the Dalai Lama is an unsurpassed example in disseminating the ideas of freedom, peace and tolerance. The spiritual leader of the Tibetans spoke about the friendly feelings demonstrated by Poles and their support for the cause of free Tibet. On Tuesday, some six thousand young people attended a meeting during which the Dalai Lama spoke about tolerance. He also visited a Jewish synagogue, talked to Carmelite nuns in their convent and had a meeting with the President of Wroclaw.
His Holiness receives the honorary citizenship of Wroclaw city from the Chairperson of the City Council, Mayor Rafat Dutkiewicz is seen behind His Holiness.
The Polish capital is the last leg of his tour, which also included Krakow and Gdansk, where the Dalai Lama attended the ceremonies marking the 25th anniversary of the Nobel Peace Prize for Lech Walesa.
Meanwhile, the pro-Tibetan Foundation "Other Space" has appealed to the Warsaw City Council to support the initiative of a group of councilors to name a roundabout after Free Tibet. In its letter to the City Council chairwoman, the Foundation recalls that earlier this year, the Council issued a strong protest against human rights violations in Tibet by the Chinese authorities.
China has protested against the councilor's motion in a letter sent to the Polish government.
